Is it a job where you continually take on new challenges?  A concrete vision of what you want in a dream job, can give you insight into what will give you the most satisfaction in your next job.

2. Determine yours strengths

Write down a list of your top strengths.  Most people find happiness and satisfaction in jobs that are suited to their strengths.  What are areas that you can improve on that will help take you to the next level?

3. Evaluate your past

Take a look at each of the companies you have worked for in the past.  What did you value the most?  What did you like the least about the company culture and environment?  Which leaders did you value most and why?  Which leaders did you like the least and why?  When where you the happiest at each place of employment?  What where your biggest accomplishments?  What did you like the most and least about your job responsibilities?

The answers to these questions will help you understand what to look for in future jobs and what kind of things to stay away from.  Your work environment is critical in in bringing out your best work which can translate to happiness and satisfaction in your job.

4. Talk to as many people as possible

Talk to people who are currently in the positions you are aspiring to.  What gives them most job satisfaction?  What frustrates them the most? Go on LinkedIn and read people’s job descriptions or go online and read interviews and articles about people you admire.

5. Additional Education

Will your dream job require additional education or degrees?  Formulate a plan and a timetable.  Creating a timetable helps you stay motivated and keeps you moving towards your goal.

6. Consider the type of work environment where you will thrive

Do you prefer to be around people who are competitive or collaborative? Do you prefer to work and go home or are you looking for a place where co-workers are friends outside of the office? Is the company hierarchical or flat? Do you work as a team or work primarily on your own? Is there a great deal of red tape or will you have the power to make decisions and move quickly? Can people work from home? What is the work-life balance like? What are your salary expectations? Think about the type of work environment that will be a good fit for you and the lifestyle you hope to have.
